She's only ten years old, but she knows something is wrong with her father. Her mother says he just needs time to rest, to clear his mind. They must never question him. They must never call the police

Tawnysha Greene

Greene's coming-of-age novel is a brilliant illustration of the real life struggle between love and death, good vs evil.  The narrator, ten years old and hard of hearing, is trapped in the reality of poverty, abuse, and desparation.  She takes care of her deaf sister as her parents move them from place to place.  Her father, between bouts of manic highs and lows, victimizes the children and their mother. Slowly, the narrotor becomes aware of the real source of the family's struggle and begins to craft an escape.  With amazing sensitivity, awareness, and perception, she is able to comprehend the level of unjustice that is present.  She begins tracking the famiy's journey and ultimately saving their lives.
